I feel very lucky to say that I have known little Elliott since he was about 12 weeks old. The first time I saw this guy with his gorgeous blue eyes, was the night he joined seven other babies arranged in a circle on the floor with their wide-eyed moms and dads watching over them from above, anxious that any one of our babies would be the first to cry non-stop through our first PEPS meeting. Oh, the horror!
As the weeks passed by, the babies grew and all of us parents grew more confident as we leaned on each other for support and humor through what has to be the hardest experience we’ve ever faced – to raise another human being. While the PEPS group offered us invaluable information on what to expect with each developmental milestone of our daughter’s young life, the true gift we received are the friendships we have formed and will keep for the rest of our lives.
Jessica and Joel are the kind of parents and friends that anyone should hope to have in their lives. They both have extraordinary jobs, but are far more humble about it than you would expect. They clearly and outwardly love their son without abandon and you can just see it in Elliott’s eyes, mannerisms – he is one fully loved child. They are candid, non-judgemental and generally travel the middle of the road when it comes to their parenting style, which makes it so easy to be around them because we can be real about everything. It means that I don’t have to drop the word ‘organic’ in every sentence or pretend that my child sleeps through the night (she doesn’t) or that I’m excited to potty train her (I’m not).
So, when I told Jessica about this photography ‘thing’ I’m doing and suggested that we do a family shoot, I wasn’t at all surprised that she was supportive and all about it. Afterwards, I remember coming home and telling my husband that I felt like I ‘nailed it.’ What I meant is that I felt like I captured their family dynamic of fun and laughter, but they made it so easy for me with their bright eyes and wide grins – such a beautiful family.
Thank you, Jessica, Joel and Elliott for your friendship and for believing in me.
